US Soccer reboots, elects Carlos Cordeiro president
Carlos Cordeiro was elected president of the U.S. Soccer Federation on the third ballot Saturday
12 February, 2018, 01:18
Solo was one of eight candidates running to replace outgoing federation president Sunil Gulati, who decided not to seek a fourth term following the USA men's national team elimination from the 2018 World Cup on the last day of CONCACAF qualifying.
The 61-year-old business executive won the governing body's presidential election Saturday.
That Gulati didn't succeed in leading his chosen successor to the victory was the biggest news on Saturday.
Cordeiro paid tribute to the outgoing Sunil Gulati, whom he replaces in the position, highlighting his "tireless service". The U.S. has won three of the seven FIFA Women's World Cups since the tournament's inception in 1991.
Other priorities include the hiring of a general manager for the men's team, a position Cordeiro said must be filled before launching a coaching search. There's a reason why the millennials identify with soccer.
Cordeiro clinched election on the third ballot, where he easily eclipsed the 50 percent threshold, winning 69 percent of the vote. The field initially featured eight candidates.
But if there were two establishment candidates, as many felt there were, Cordeiro was one of them. The women's game - the push for equal play for national team players and the problems facing the National Women's Soccer League (NWSL) - needs looking at too.
Two former United States men's national team players, Eric Wynalda and Kyle Martino, have also garnered wide support.
"Elections are messy", said Gulati during a 45-minute address before the electronic votes were cast on cellphone-sized voting pads that caused a fair amount of head-scratching in amongst the electorate.
"The two establishment candidates, Carlos Cordeiro and Kathy Carter, haven't just been part of the system, they have created and shaped into what it is today, '" Solo said.
Had the team gotten a draw at Trinidad and Tobago, had Panama not gotten its late goal against Costa Rica, and had the US qualified, this election, if Gulati still made a decision to leave, would have been a much quieter one.
"At the grassroots level, we need to develop a soccer culture, wider our reach and encourage more kids to play".
"Today the status quo is unacceptable", Cordeiro said. This vote comes down to one simple question: "Who can actually deliver that change?"
United States fans who were so dejected after the national team embarrassingly failed to qualify for this summer's World Cup have urged change for months. Gulati will retain a role as a member of the USSF board and the Federation Internationale de Football Association executive council, and as chairman of the North American bid to host the 2026 World Cup.
Solo earned 1.6 percent of the first vote, per Grant Wahl of Sports Illustrated, good for sixth place out of eight candidates. We have enjoyed a productive relationship with Carlos in his time as a U.S. Soccer board member during the last 11 years.
The remaining 2.6 percent represents other constituents, such as board members, life members and fan representatives. During a 15-minute break before the second round of voting, Caligiuri, who took just 0.5 percent of the first vote, officially dropped out of the race.
The second ballot saw Cordeiro pull further clear by securing 41.8 per cent to Carter's 33.3, with Wynalda a distant third on 10.8 per cent. The group of 20 current and former national teamers, which controlled 20 percent of the vote, decided in the final 12 hours of the campaign to vote as a bloc for Cordeiro.
"I am not surprised", Solo said after the election.
"It's not about winning any one council". The rest of the voting by the members of Adult and Youth Councils varied for the different candidate, as they did not vote as a consensus. You need a coalition of support.
