The US Holocaust Memorial Museum says it is rescinding the award due to Aung San Suu Kyi's inaction over what it called "mounting evidence of genocide" committed by the Myanmar military against civilians from the Rohingya minority.

The U.S. Holocaust Museum has chose to rescind an award honoring Burmese leader and Nobel laureate Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, who has been silent on the ethnic cleansing in her country.

The Washington-based museum honored Aung San Suu Kyi with the Elie Wiesel Award in 2012, but announced Tuesday it had been rescinded.

The museum has come to believe that Aung San Suu Kyi failed to meet these criteria because of her refusal to stop or even acknowledge the Rohingya slaughter by Myanmar's military since it began last August, the Times reported.

A museum statement said that under her leadership, the National League for Democracy has refused to cooperate with the United Nations, promoted hate speech against the Rohingya and actively worked to prevent journalists from exposing "the scope of the crimes" in Myanmar's Rakhine state.

The commissioner also decried authorities in Myanmar destroying potential evidence of global crimes, citing "reports that Rohingya villages which were attacked in recent years, and alleged mass graves of the victims, are being bulldozed". Now the nature of the violence has been transformed into a campaign of terror and forced hunger to get the remaining Rohingyas to leave their homes and flee to Bangladesh, he said.

"The military's orchestration of the crimes against Rohingya and the severity of the atrocities in recent months demand that you use your moral authority to address this situation", the museum wrote in its letter. Holocaust survivor Elie Wiesel, for whom the award is named, was the first. The rate of killings and sexual violence in the state of Rakhine, Myanmar, has decreased compared to a year ago, but killings, systematic rapes, torture, and kidnapping continue, he said.

In Geneva on Wednesday the United Nations human rights chief Zeid Ra'ad Al Hussein called for a new body tasked with preparing criminal indictments over the Myanmar atrocities.

Almost 700,000 Rohingya have fled from Buddhist-dominated Myanmar into neighboring Bangladesh since last August to escape a brutal crackdown by Myanmar security forces the United Nations has said amounts to ethnic cleansing.
