Trump To Use North Korea Sanctions As Key Leverage

Mao-Nixon Trump To Use North Korea Sanctions As Key Leverage

As Ivanka took part in various diplomatic meetings, including briefing South Korean President Moon Jae-in, several US and South Korean media organizations published articles that compared Ivanka and Kim Yo-jung.

The White House maintains that Kim has been compelled to reach out for presidential-level talks because of Trump's policy of "maximum pressure". "After years of diplomatic stalemate over the North's nuclear program, we could use an injection of top-down decision making".

Miller says the North Koreans are likely agreeing to the talks because they're close to achieving their nuclear development goals.

Still, the White House indicated that planning for the meeting was fully on track. But, he said he'd wait to see what happened with Guam.

The Trump administration has led a worldwide push to tighten global sanctions on North Korea to choke off resources needed for its weapons programs.

Other regional powers reacted cautiously. They'd say that North Korea can't be trusted, because it has made agreements in the past to restrict its nuclear program and then cheated.

The gains came against a backdrop of tariffs and North Korea developments.

During the visit, Kim reportedly joked over dinners of Korean hotpot and cold noodles. Neutral Switzerland, which often hosts summits, said it was ready to facilitate the meeting. But Sanders said a time and location for the meeting hadn't been set. "The bottles kept coming", said another administrative source who had official knowledge of the meeting. The White House didn't immediately confirm the news, though, and diplomats were left scrambling to response to the unplanned announcement.

They could also meet in the truce village of Panmunjom in the Demilitarized Zone between the rival Koreas or, Hong said, the southern South Korean resort island of Jeju.

"Not at all, I think that the president is getting exactly what he wants", she said.

Panama: Trump hotel standoff ends as president surrenders physical control
On Monday, armed Panamanian police escorted Trump Organization management out of the establishment, seemingly for good. Fintiklis led the charge, and proclaimed his intention to hire a new management team and rebrand the property.

Chung Eui-yong, head of the South Korea's National Security Office and the special envoy of President Moon Jae-in, said that Kim told him in Pyongyang earlier this week that "as the situation on the Korean peninsula becomes stabilized, the South Korea-U.S. joint military exercises may also be adjusted".

Kim Yo-jong, Kim Jong-un's sister, was the most prominent member of that delegation. Or the two sides could draw up a half-baked accord that simply buys North Korea more time.

"Trump blusters that if sanctions do not work, the US should go over to rough phase II and that as it is a very rough action, it would make the whole world unhappy", the newspaper noted. "We've got to break this cycle".

Trump, in his tweet, noted that Kim had spoken about denuclearization with the South Korean representatives. Or he could get into a shouting match that makes him so angry he orders a strike on North Korea, setting off a nuclear conflagration.

"Great progress being made", Trump later tweeted, adding: "Meeting being planned!"

On Friday, Tillerson drew a distinction between "talks" and "negotiations", said Trump would engage in talks with Kim. "We're a long way from negotiations. We just need to be very clear-eyed and realistic about it", Tillerson said. He's oscillated between threats and insults directed at Kim that have fueled fears of war, and more conciliatory rhetoric. Trump has called Kim "rocket man", while Kim described Trump as a "dotard".

"The President will not have the meeting without have concrete steps or seeing concrete actions taken by North Korea", she said.

While Rodong Sinmun protested human rights criticism of the repressive regime, neither Chung nor Trump has mentioned the Kim regime's extensive list of human rights abuses since Thursday night's announcement.

White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders would later claim, somewhat cryptically, that the issue is moot because Trump - who had denied knowledge of the payment - had won the case at arbitration.
