Fired FBI deputy director 'kept personal memos regarding Trump'

Attorney General Jeff Sessions, who often is at odds with Trump, fired McCabe amid a review of the FBI's investigation of Hillary Clinton's private email server while she was secretary of state. McCabe was already basically out the door, and firing him now - regardless of how valid the reasons in the yet-to-be-released inspector general's report - comes off as even more spiteful.

His lawyer, Michael R. Bromwich, said Justice Department officials had rushed to fire Mr. McCabe before he could qualify for his pension.

Some in the bureau might view McCabe's termination so close to retirement as an unnecessarily harsh and politically influenced punishment for a man who spent more than 20 years at the FBI.

The controversy around McCabe stems, in part, from yet-to-be-released findings by the Justice Department's inspector general that the former Federal Bureau of Investigation deputy director misled investigators about allowing two top Federal Bureau of Investigation officials to talk to reporters about his decision to open a case into the Clinton Foundation.

He used the occasion to renew his attack on former FBI Director James Comey. Notably absent was a statement from Comey, McCabe's former boss, though Comey did say after McCabe stepped down as deputy director that his second-in-command "stood tall over the last 8 months, when small people were trying to tear down an institution we all depend on".

President Trump's personal lawyer, John Dowd, on Saturday said it was time for Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein to end the special counsel's Russian Federation investigation for good.

But McCabe pushed back hard, saying his firing is yet another attempt by the administration to undermine Special Counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into Russian meddling in the USA election process, and allegations that Mr. Trump's campaign colluded with those efforts.

President Trump later tweeted, "As the House Intelligence Committee has concluded, there was no collusion between Russian Federation and the Trump Campaign", but said there was "tremendous leaking, lying and corruption at the highest levels of the FBI, Justice & State".

Melrose said the new offer (81 pence plus a 1.69 new Melrose share for each GKN share) won't be increased under any circumstances. It is not following up on any proposals because management remains focused on turning the business around, it said.

Fired FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe kept memos of his conversations with President Trump and what happened during the firing of former FBI Director James Comey, CBS News' Paula Reid reports. Mr McCabe denies it.

The FBI also released a trove of internal emails and documents in January that confirmed McCabe was not warned against becoming involved in the Clinton investigation but recused himself anyway following The Journal's report about his wife's campaign.

President Trump also lambasted the main stream media for their reaction to McCabe's firing.

The Associated Press reported Saturday that McCabe - like his predecessor Comey -maintained personal memos regarding his encounters with the president. McCabe said he honestly answered questions about whom he had spoken to and when, and that when he thought his answers were misunderstood, he contacted investigators to correct them. This is apparently the first time anyone from Trump's legal team has publicly said the probe should be shut down.

He said based on those findings and the recommendation of the department's senior career official, "I have terminated the employment of Andrew McCabe effective immediately".

McCabe has always been a target of Trump's anger.

"The only thing the President has been applying pressure to was to make sure we get this (Russia investigation) resolved so that you guys (the media) and everyone else can focus on the things that Americans actually care about", Sanders said then.
