The alarms were sold at Menards, The Home Depot, Walmart, Amazon and Kidde's website between September 2016 and this January. If a yellow cap is seen, consumers should immediately contact Kidde to request a free replacement.

Kidde said Dual Sensor smoke detectors with model numbers PI2010 and PI9010 are affected by the recall.

"KIDDE" will be on the front center of the unit and the model number and date code are printed on the back. 10 through 2017 October 13, the recall states.

The recall involves 452,000 detectors in the United States and another 40,000 in Canada.

Consumers should not try to remove the cap or fix the alarm, Kidde says. If no yellow cap is present, the alarm can be reinstalled, according to the company.

Consumers should not remove or discard the recalled alarm until a new one is received and installed. There have been no reports of incidents or injuries as a result of a yellow cap being present, officials said. Customers who see a yellow cap shouldn't try to take the alarm apart or do fix. Federal safety regulators are warning that thousands of Kidde smoke alarms may not alert people if there is a fire in their home.
