While coming in ahead of tracking, that's still a troublesome start for a movie that cost at least $150 million to produce before marketing.

Universal and Legendary's "Pacific Rim Uprising" landed a respectable $280million opening weekend at 3,708 locations. There was plenty of competition for the attention of moviegoers, between basketball playoffs and Saturday's marches across the country in protest of gun violence.

Speaking of which, Uprising brought in an estimated $122.5 million internationally this weekend, including a $65 million debut in China, ~$20 million more than the first film's opening weekend in the market before it went on to gross over $111 million. The movie, which reportedly cost about $150 million to make, took a pounding from critics, while audiences gave it a so-so B CinemaScore. Domestically, it topped out at $101.8 million.

As for "Black Panther", finishing second this weekend with $16.5 million pushes it past "The Avengers" to put it in the top five highest grossing domestic films ever and the top superhero film on that list. And it's the No. 12 pic of all time. The film is so popular that Roadside Attractions and Lionsgate added 653 runs, bringing the movie's total theater count to 2,253. Black Panther has basically held the number one spot for 5 consecutive weeks, or little over a month, fending off competition from Disney's A Wrinkle In Time, and breaking century-old records in the process. Directed by John Stevenson and executive produced by Elton John, it features the voices of James McAvoy, Emily Blunt, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Mary J. Blige, and Johnny Depp.

Rounding out the top five were I Can Only Imagine, Sherlock Gnomes, and Tomb Raider, which each earned $13.8 million, $10.6 million, and $10.4 million, respectively.

Paramount's animated comedy film "Sherlock Gnomes" opened in fourth place with an estimated 10.6 million dollars in its opening weekend.

Young adult romantic drama "Midnight Sun" stars Bella Thorne as a teen who has been sheltered at home since childhood due to a life-threatening sensitivity to sunlight.

Midnight Sun managed to come in ahead of Steven Soderbergh's Unsane, a new psychological horror-thriller starring The Crown's Claire Foy and shot with an iPhone 7. Juno Temple, Joshua Leonard, Jay Pharoah, Aimee Mullins and Amy Irving co-star.

Rolling out in limited release is Wes Andseron's Isle of Dogs. While not a stellar opening for a film of this size, it is well above Mojo's forecast as well as above Universal's expectations heading into the weekend.
