Uber faces landmark legal case over fatal accident

How the future of self-driving cars looks in Arizona Uber faces landmark legal case over fatal accident

In a letter to Uber chief executive Dara Khosrowshahi, the Republican governor said he found video footage of the accident on 18 March, which was released to the public last Wednesday, to be "disturbing and alarming". Uber had been ordered by Gov. Doug Ducey to halt testing in Arizona, the site of its recent tragic accident that killed a woman in Tempe.

The company has decided not to reapply for a permit to test autonomous vehicles with the California DMV in the wake of the crash, a spokesperson told Business Insider, ending its tests in the state for the immediate future.

Uber previously said it's pausing self-driving vehicle tests in every city following the incident that is believed to be the first known death caused by an autonomous auto operating on public roads. Uber has temporarily stopped testing in all cities, but Arizona is the first area to negate the billion-dollar company's will.

Rival sensor-maker Intel said that its Mobileye technology would have been able to prevent the fatal accident, and the head of Google's autonomous auto division said that its technology would also have been "able to handle" the situation which led to the fatal accident. Just a few weeks ago, Ducey started to allow autonomous vehicle testing in order to test without a safety driver. "As governor, my top priority is public safety". "We proactively suspended our self-driving operations, including in California, immediately following the Tempe incident".

Alphabet Inc's self-driving vehicle unit Waymo sued Uber previous year saying that Levandowski downloaded more than 14,000 confidential documents in 2015 before leaving to start Otto. She died of her injuries at a local hospital. "Every other company would get a black eye, too, but they might be forgiven".

In Kolkata several rallies were taken out by the RSS-backed Ram Navami Udjapan Samity (Celebration Committee). School board exam students have, however, been able to go to their respective examination centres.

The Tempe Police Department and the National Transportation Safety Board have launched investigations into the crash.

Company documents obtained by the New York Times showed that even after a year of testing, Uber's AVs struggled to travel 13 miles-the company's stated goal-without disengagement.

The NTSB said it will be gathering information about the onboard technology and "beginning collection of any and all electronic data stored on the test vehicle or transmitted to Uber".

Additional technological tools marked for creation include a high-precision road map, and an artificial environment allowing for self-driving testing in simulated harsh weather conditions and during nighttime at the autonomous vehicle testing complex K-city. There was a driver behind the wheel of the auto, but they weren't in control when the accident occurred.
