'Theory of Everything' Stars Eddie Redmayne & Felicity Jones Attend Stephen Hawking's Funeral

The service is being held at Great St Mary's Church a stones throw from Gonville and Caius College where Prof Hawking was a fellow for 52 years. Since his death at home earlier this month thousands of people have visited this college to sign his book The Theory of Everything actress 33 has also starred in Star Wars and studied at Oxford University

The funeral for professor Stephen Hawking, an icon of theoretical physics, took place at Cambridge, in Great St Mary's, a church at the university where he first found fame as a student working on his groundbreaking studies of space and time.

The piece was commissioned previous year by Hawking's Cambridge university college, Gonville & Caius, in honor of the professor's 75th birthday. Although the funeral service was private, the crowds remained respectfully silent outside University Church Great St. Mary but applauded when his casket arrived and was carried into the church.

Redmayne, who won an Academy Award for playing Hawking in the 2014 film, spoke during the service, reading from Ecclesiastes.

Felicity Jones, who played Hawking's wife in the film, was also at the service, along with model Lily Cole.

When the funeral procession entered the church, the bell rang out 76 times, one for each year of Hawking's life.

The church is located near Caius College where Hawking was a fellow for 52 years.

The cosmologist was diagnosed with motor neurone disease in his 20s.

His close family, including his three children Lucy, Robert and Tim, followed behind the hearse carrying the professor's coffin.

"I, like many who knew and loved him, had come to think of him as immortal and our sorrow is tinged with a feeling of disbelief that he is no longer here".

Little tributes were also made along with the big ones, in the form of the white flowers adorning Hawking's casket, which were lilies of the universe variety and roses of the polar star variety.

As seen in video footage, his coffin was decorated with a lovely arrangement of white lilies, representing the universe that was such a big part of Hawking's life and research. So, the service will be both inclusive and traditional, reflecting the breadth and diversity of his life.

Robert Hawking, Hawking's eldest child, delivered a eulogy at the service.

A private reception was held afterward at Trinity College.

He will be cremated and his ashes will be placed in London's Westminster Abbey near Isaac Newton.
