Kentucky, Oklahoma teachers rally as rebellion grows Kentucky, Oklahoma teachers rally as rebellion grows

The Oklahoman's Ben Felder has been covering this story since the beginning.

Most teachers were remarkably positive about their schools: 88 per cent said their schools "set high expectations for students", 76 per cent said "every student has challenging (stretch) learning goals", and 91 per cent said "we effectively include students in our classes whatever their needs, strengths and identities".

By some measures, Oklahoma teachers are the lowest-paid in the country out of the fifty states plus the District of Columbia.

The red-state teachers rebellion that started in West Virginia continues to grow, with teachers in Kentucky and Oklahoma walking out on Monday after the Kentucky teachers shut down schools in almost two dozen counties on Friday. This increase in funding can be directly attributed to the tenacious efforts of our educators and our community rallying in support of public education.

In Arizona, where pressure is also growing for a statewide walkout, Governor Doug Ducey scoffed at teacher demands for a 20 percent pay raise on Thursday, declaring that they would not get it "now or in the foreseeable future". So, why are the protests ongoing?

The funding would raise by $5,000 the pay of teachers starting out on their career, and provide a raise of almost $8,000 for one with 25 years' experience, lawmakers said. And there's also concerns about the state funding affecting textbooks, school programs and technology.

Most of the Oklahoma teachers walked out of classrooms across the state to attend the rally in Oklahoma City.

The report on the survey tool is based on the first anonymous responses from 4355 teachers in 335 schools.

Some teachers said their salaries were so low that they needed second jobs - such as working as restaurant waiters or mowing lawns - to make ends meet. Thank you for your understanding and valued support as we continue in our efforts to provide the best for Ponca City Public School students.

But for a Republican-dominated legislature to make these concessions-and agree to increased taxes by a super-majority vote of three-quarters, the first time this has happened since an anti-tax referendum passed in 1992-is an encouraging sign.

Felder: The wild card in Oklahoma is that for any tax increase to pass in the legislature it requires a three-fourths supermajority. But the plan must still survive votes in the Republican-controlled Senate and House of Representatives later in the day. These eruptions of labor protest took the media by surprise, shining a spotlight on the already-bad-and-getting-worse conditions that educators have had to put up with, especially in the past 10 years since the Great Recession.

Last week's vote included bipartisan support but it was still a painful vote for many Republicans.

In contrast, the overwhelming sentiment among teachers is for an all-out struggle to secure serious increases. "We were so happy, we thought we were saved by that, but then NESA said they would just ignore the AntiDiscrimination Board".
