Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Vladimir Putin have launched the construction of the Akkuyu nuclear power plant earlier in the day.

Intensifying affronts in Syria's Afrin, Ghouta and Idlib regions have made room for Turkish President Erdogan's Operation Olive Branch to take effect and target militant Kurds (YPP), much to the dismay of the YPP-dependent United States, which is also ready to sanction Turkey if it accepts a delivery of Russian S-400 missiles.

'We are also in close cooperation with Russian Federation to end as soon as possible the terror threat and clashes in Syria, ' Erdogan said.

That year will mark the 100th anniversary of the founding of modern Turkey, when Erdogan says the country will be among the world's top 10 economies. "In terms of shortening the delivery schedule, we have done this at the request of our Turkish friends and partners". When Akkuyu starts operating with all its reactors we will cover 10% of our country's electrical needs.

Erdogan said that Turkish energy sector - which is still predominantly based on petroleum, natural gas and coal- would be healthier along with the Akkuyu NPP, Anadolu Agency reports.

The Akkuy nuclear power plant in Mersin County is being built together with the Russian company Rosatom and will have four power units with a capacity of 1200 megawatts. The project is estimated to cost $20 billion.

Turkey and Russian Federation have forged burgeoning ties in recent months on a number of areas including energy as well as the Syrian crisis, despite differences on key policy areas.

Erdogan and Putin met eight times previous year and regularly speak on the phone.

Their ever-warming ties comes as Russian Federation is running into widespread diplomatic fallout from the poisoned spy scandal in British and Turkey's relations with its Western allies have worsened over human rights issues and its military operations against Kurdish militia in Syria.

He also mentioned other strategic projects between Turkey and Russia, including the purchase of Russian S-400 Air Defense Systems and Turkish Stream Natural Gas Pipeline project.

The leaders of Turkey, Russia and Iran meet in Ankara on Wednesday to coordinate policy on the war in Syria.

Their cooperation comes despite having positions on opposing sides in the Syrian conflict.
