Prince Philip in 'Good Spirits' After Hip Replacement Surgery

The Duke of Edinburgh has undergone a successful hip replacement operation and is comfortable and in good spirits, Buckingham Palace has said. Buckingham Palace announced in August he was readmitted to the hospital while on his annual Scottish summer at Balmoral.

Prince Philip has been in good health for many years, but he was admitted to the same hospital - King Edward VII in central London - last June when he was understood to have been suffering from a bladder infection.

It is expected that Buckingham Palace will provide updates where appropriate.

Philip also missed the Easter Sunday service at St George's Chapel, where his grandson Prince Harry is due to marry Meghan Markle next month.

Greek-born Philip has remained at his wife's side throughout her 66-year reign, the longest in British history, and has earned a reputation for brusque comments and occasional gaffes at some of the thousands of ceremonial events he has attended.

Both the Duke of Edinburgh and the Queen had been staying at Windsor Castle.

Speaking about the surgery at the time , he revealed damaging his ribs hurt way more than heart surgery ever could. Ketchell noted in a statement to ABC that the procedure was planned and the star is now in stable condition.

But Philip does not walk with the aid of a stick as the Queen Mother did and was spotted last week driving himself around Windsor Great Park, leading to speculation he may have a problem with torn cartilage.

He was due to attend an event at Windsor Castle to mark Andrew's new role as Colonel of the Grenadier Guards but was unable to attend because he was feeling "under the weather".

Philip announced his retirement from royal duties in May and curtailed most of his charity work although he still accompanies the queen on occasion.

Prince Philip has been a constant and often mischievous presence at royal functions for decades and is well-known for punctuating royal pomp with a taste for off-colour jokes. However, he began to experience various health problems from the age of 87.

The 96-year-old looked in good spirits as he was pictured holding the reigns while wearing riding gloves, a heavy black coat and a flat-cap.
