Australia's privacy watchdog is investigating Facebook amid fears Cambridge Analytica accessed the private details of more than 300,000 local users. In the meantime, Facebook promises, it won't be using its backdoor access to delete or retract any more of its chief exec's messages.

Facebook has acknowledged that data from more than 300,000 Australians may have been improperly shared with the analysis company - out of some 87 million users worldwide.

Statements from Facebook's chief operating officer regarding concerns over the company's collection of users' data this week left some critics wondering why Facebook-already one of the richest tech companies in Silicon Valley-still appears intensely focused on accumulating vast profits even as its monetization methods have proven controversial. Much like the House hearing, this will also be focused on how Facebook manages its users' data.

The U.K. regulator is in the midst of an investigation into the scandal, which saw data from Facebook users misused by political data firm Cambridge Analytica in the 2016 USA election.

Facebook says it began erasing the messages of Zuckerberg and a few other top executives in 2014 after computer hackers obtained and released emails from Sony Pictures executives.

Facebook has been caught deleting old messages sent by CEO Mark Zuckerberg - a feature unavailable to ordinary users.

But, also pushing back on criticism Facebook takes information without consent, saying, "The vast majority of the data that Facebook has about you is because you chose to share it".

However, Sandberg said, the company still relies on users' personal information to keep its advertising service afloat.

Facebook said it believes most people on the social media site could have had their public profile "scraped" due to a search function allowing third parties to find users based on their phone number or email address.

"Now, we will wait for responses from Cambridge Analytica before taking any further step".

Every advertiser who wants to run a political or issue ad on Facebook must have their identity and location verified, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg said in a post Friday.

On Thursday, TechCrunch reported that some recipients of Zuckerberg's messages found they had disappeared from their inboxes without their knowledge while their replies remained. Facebook confirmed the bulk removal option to TechCrunch after The Next Web's Matt Navarra publicly commented on the policy change on Twitter. The company also said it plans to alert users whose information was compromised in the Cambridge Analytica leak.
