Hungary set to re-elect anti-Muslim immigration Prime Minister

Voters wait in long lines as Hungary chooses next government The Latest: Orban says election is about 'Hungary's future'
Sidney Guerrero | 09 April, 2018, 00:46

Most polling stations closed and the vote count began in Hungary's election on Sunday, after a very high turnout that could threaten Viktor Orban's parliamentary majority.

Polls predicted his populist, right-wing Fidesz party would win a majority in the 199-seat legislature.

For rebellions such as refusal to meet EU requirements on accepting mass migration, accusations of violations of university freedom, freedom of assembly and association, social rights, and alleged "everyday corruption", the European Union could stop money going to Hungary, or even insist Hungary repays funds already given. Orban, Hungary's longest-serving post-communist premier, opposes deeper integration of the bloc.

The government has been accused by critics of using anti-Semitic stereotypes in its relentless campaign against Mr Soros, who is Jewish.

Although Orban's actions, including refusing to participate in the EU's refugee resettlement scheme, have sometimes annoyed other European governments, Fidesz is afforded a measure of protection by virtue of its membership of the main center-right EPP grouping in the European Parliament. The EU is in Berlin, in Budapest, in Warsaw, in Prague and in Bucharest.

Fears over immigration are entrenched in Hungary after about 400,000 refugees and migrants passed through the European Union member in 2015, prompting Mr Orban to erect a border fence that is popular with voters.

Pakistan, Afghanistan agree to achieve common aim of regional security
Pakistan had brokered the first round of direct talks between the fragile Afghan government and Taliban in Islamabad in July 2015. The statement said information about the ongoing "operations is shared with the Afghan security forces on a regular basis".

"We love our country and we are fighting for our country", Orban said.

Dr. Gyorgy Bakondi, chief adviser for homeland security to Prime Minister Viktor Orban and one of the key architects of Hungary's highly-effective border wall, explained why resisting the EU's migrant directives was so important to his country.

'We are celebrating democracy and it seems like this feast will be handsome because many of us are taking part, ' said Gergely Karacsony, the leading candidate of the left-wing Socialist and Dialogue parties.

Meanwhile, Jobbik leader Gabor Vona cast his ballot in the northeastern town of Gyongyos, saying that the result would "determine the fate of Hungary not just for four years but. for two generations". "Emigration may or may not define Hungary, and I would prefer that it does not".

"It's for sure that a low turnout would only have favoured Fidesz" and its highly committed voters, said Gabor Gyori, a senior analyst at political research institute Policy Solutions.

Election officials said voter turnout was 68.1 percent by 6:30 p.m. (16:30 GMT), 30 minutes before the official end of voting. He is also credited with keeping the budget deficit under control, reducing unemployment and some of Hungary's debt, and putting its economy on a growth track.
