The confirmation on Sunday evening, U.S. time, offers the administration greater assurances that North Korean leader Kim Jong-un is committed to a potential meeting with President Donald Trump by the end of next month.

The date of the meeting remains unknown.

"While the press has reported that North Korea is willing to negotiate their nuclear programme, this is not exactly what North Korea said".

American and North Korean intelligence officials have spoken several times and have even met in a third country, with a focus on nailing down a location for the talks.

North Korea has been under heavy UN Security Council sanctions since it staged a series of nuclear tests and missile launches in defiance of global pressure to abandon its atomic programme.

Liverpool, Everton draw blanks in Merseyside derby
Liverpool fans were not celebrating either, but at least they are likely to get another chance to do so come Tuesday. Manager Liverpool FC , Jurgen Klopp seemed quite confident about his team sans its stars, against the Toffeemen.

Michael Pompeo, the U.S. Secretary of State, and the team from the Central Intelligence Agency are dealing with the preparations to the summit. Pompeo, whose confirmation hearing before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee is set for April 12, was chosen after Trump fired Rex Tillerson as his top diplomat.

The back-channel talks are the latest move in a flurry of diplomatic activity aimed at resolving the nuclear crisis on the Korean peninsula.

Trump agreed to the summit on the spot when visiting South Korean officials - South Korea's National Security Adviser Chung Eui Yong and intelligence chief Suh Hoon - presented him the invitation from Mr Kim early last month (March ). During that visit Kim was reported by Beijing as having committed to denuclearisation.

The US official declined to say exactly when and how the US-North Korea communications had taken place but said the two sides had held multiple direct contacts. "It's a good signal that the talks are going back and forth (between the U.S. and North Korea)".

However, increased exercise was seen by satellite at a North Korean nuclear website in February, pics of which imply the North has begun preliminary testing of a newfound light water reactor and possibly attracted still another reactor online at its Yongbyon Nuclear Research Center.
