Last summer Durant signed a two-year, $51 million deal, which was about $10 million less than what his max contract would have been.

The Golden State Warriors superstar plans to opt out of his contract this summer before restructure his deal in order to remain with the team, ESPN's Chris Haynes reported Wednesday, citing National Basketball Association sources.

However, his time on the open market will be brief.

Haynes reports that KD opted to turn down the $26.2 million salary in order to restructure a new deal with the Warriors that will ultimately pay him even more money.

According to Haynes, the reigning NBA Finals MVP has no real incentives to take pay cut this time around. The discount allowed the team to re-sign Shaun Livingston and Andre Iguodala, something general manager Bob Myers appreciated.

Unfortunately for the rest of the league, there is nearly no chance Durant opts out in search of a change of scenery.

Durant could very well be looking at a four-year, $158 million contract-or something shorter if he wants to afford himself more flexibility.

The 29-year-old's Golden State tenure has worked out splendidly in terms of team success, as the Warriors won 67 regular-season games in 2016-17 en route to their second championship in three years.

Durant is earning much less than what a player of his caliber should be getting.

In the former scenario, Durant can opt out after the first year and sign a five-year max deal that would see his salary peak at $49.9 million in his fifth year.

The contract included a player opt-out provision after the 2017-18 season, and it appears Durant will exercise his option.

To do so, the 2017 National Basketball Association champions will have to pay Durant considerably more than over the last two years but they have a number of options at their disposal.

As detailed by ESPN cap expert Bobby Marks, there are three options Durant could pursue when restructuring his deal.
