Marquez - the two-time defending world champion - maintained his record at the Grand Prix of the Americas, the third race of the 2018 MotoGP season.

The 25-year-old Spaniard has won from the pole in all five races at the 20-corner circuit in Austin, Texas, and had kept his ideal qualifying record intact with a fast lap of 2mins 3.658secs ahead of Sunday's third race of the season, bouncing back quickly after a crash to do so.

Iannone briefly retook the lead, but Marquez took control of the race and never looked like letting it slip, easing to victory 3.450 seconds ahead of Movistar Yamaha's Vinales, with Iannone taking a first podium finish for Suzuki.

Speaking after qualifying, Marquez insisted he'd tried to move out of Vinales' way as quickly as he could - and that he hadn't noticed his rival sooner because he was preoccupied with Iannone riding slow up ahead. From there, it was just a matter of avoiding mistakes on an easy Sunday drive.

MotoGP bad boy Marc Marquez was back to his dominant best this weekend, winning the Grand Prix of the Americas easily.

There was no chance of reeling him back to the pack. Vinales finished second and Iannone was third.

"It was one of the targets for us to be on the front row", Iannone said.

Marquez has been unbeatable at the Circuit of the Americas.

The Spaniard has been first to the checkered flag at every Austin race since its inception in 2013. Marquez had overcome a late crash to grab the top spot.

His antics in South America drew warnings from MotoGP officials that unsafe racing would draw heavy sanctions for any rider. He qualified on pole but was demoted to 4th for blocking Maverick Vinales. The Italian rider made a poor start that pushed him to sixth place. The only way Marquez could have got ruffled was if he made a bad start. I told the team that I wanted to try to lead the race from the beginning and pull a gap. "All the fans enjoyed it because I crashed, I come back out in the second bike and I win the pole". He also grabbed an American flag for a victory lap to honor Nicky Hayden, the American 2006 MotoGP champion who died in 2017 when he was hit by a vehicle while training on his bicycle in Italy.

Anyone expecting fireworks on the run to Turn 1 between Marquez and Rossi, starting side by side on Row 2, would be sorely disappointed. Marc Marquez won the race a country mile ahead of Vinales and Iannone.

"It was a good weekend because we were always in the top five", said the 39-year-old. "I'm actually really happy". The Yamaha rider was hard to catch up post that until the end of the race.
