Apple has, again, expanded Its fleet of autonomous cars in California. It is clear, however, that while Apple has a permit to test autonomous vehicles, they have not yet applied for a separate driverless testing permit.

Currently, the California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) has provided permits to 53 companies for self-driving cars that include safety drivers, resulting in a total of 409 vehicles and 1,573 safety drivers in the US. We also know that the company has 83 drivers that are certified to serve as the safety drivers for these cars.
Many automaker and ride-hailing giants are in the race, however, Tesla which now has 39 self-driving vehicles and Uber which has 29 cars.
Uber left California in late 2016, taking its 16 vehicles with it, after the California DMV threatened to revoke its vehicle registrations. Apple's self-driving auto program is still a mystery, but it appears to be centered around testing and collecting data for self-driving software, instead of a complete vehicle.
Code-named "Project Titan", Apple's self-driving programme's fleet is reportedly made up of Lexus RX450h SUVs, each of which is fitted with huge racks of LIDAR and radar sensors as well as cameras.

Apple, however, has not yet received a permit to test self-driving cars without a driver behind the wheel.
