Everton have confirmed that manager Sam Allardyce has been relieved of his post after leading the Premier League outfit for only six months.

He had originally signed a contract until June 2019, after Ronald Koeman was sacked in October 2017.

" On behalf of the Chairman, Board of Directors and Mr Moshiri, I'd like to thank Sam for the job he has done at Everton over the last seven months".

The former England manager, sacked by Everton on the day he could have been announcing the country's World Cup squad, guided the team from 13th to eighth in the Premier League following a turbulent start to the season under Koeman and then caretaker manager David Unsworth.

Allardyce has been heavily criticised by fans for his management and Everton's style of play since he took over and the club said the decision was part of their "longer-term plan".

Former Watford and Hull City manager Marco Silva is the favourite to replace Allardyce.

He appeared to be the club's first choice last autumn when the vacancy first arose, yet the Hornets refused the 40-year-old permission to speak to the Merseyside club.

Speaking to the Mirror at the League Managers Association annual awards, Allardyce made his anger at not being informed of those decisions known and suggested the writing was on the wall regarding his own future.

Allardyce stabilised the club and helped them finish the campaign in a respectable eighth position.

Allardyce, whose previous clubs include Bolton, Newcastle, Sunderland and Crystal Palace, landed his dream job with England in 2016 but that turned sour after only one match, with Allardyce stepping down following a newspaper sting.

Professor Denise Barrett-Baxendale was promoted to chief executive and Allardyce said he was "disgusted" not to have been informed.

"I'm shocked, disappointed and disgusted that the football club didn't have the decency to tell me, my director of football and my staff about the changes", he said.

"I've done all that I can, the backroom staff have done all that they can, and the players have done all that they can".
