Netanyahu hailed the opening of Guatemala's embassy in Jerusalem as "the beginning of something extraordinary" in the relationship between the two countries.

"You are always among the first, always among the first. We remember our friends, and Guatemala is our friend - then and now", Netanyahu went on, recalling that Guatemala was the second nation, after the USA, to recognize Israel in May 1948.

Morales said his country, Israel and the United States "share friendship, courage and loyalty". Paraguay has also announced that it would move its embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem by the end of May.

This comes two-days after the United States (US) inaugurated its embassy in Jerusalem.

Trump's move reversed decades of United States policy, upsetting the Arab world and Western allies.

Israel captured east Jerusalem in the 1967 Middle East war and later annexed it in a move not recognised internationally. It sees the entire city as its capital. The Trump administration has said the city's final borders should be decided by the parties.

The Palestinians said they consider the participation a "grave violation of worldwide law".

Since Monday, Israeli occupation forces have killed 65 Palestinians who were protesting against the embassy move in the besieged Gaza Strip and injured thousands more in Gaza and the occupied West Bank.

Palestinians have been demonstrating on the Gaza frontier for the past six weeks, demanding a return to family land or homes lost to Israel when it was founded in the 1948 Middle East war.

Meanwhile, Turkey told the Israeli Consul General in Istanbul to leave the country temporarily, state media said on Wednesday. The outlet says a couple of other countries are considering a similar move.

In December, President Donald Trump announced he would move the USA embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem and that he would recognize Jerusalem as the capital of the country.
