Italy's 5-star, League finish policy programme, pass to leaders

League leader Matteo Salvini and 5-Star Movement leader Luigi Di Maio are insisting they are close to a deal created to help ordinary Italians.

5-Star's parliamentary party leader Danilo Toninelli told state television Rai: "The only way to get a serious government is to return to the polls".

The leaders have been in talks on a coalition agreement in order to bring an end to over two months of political deadlock following inconclusive elections.

The parties are still trying to find the right balance between their two policy platforms, Salvini added.

"We're in the final stretch", Salvini said in a Facebook video.

"It is like they are part of the Franco-German axis".

A draft of the deal was published on Huffington Post Italia on Tuesday, including measures such as asking the European Central Bank to forgive €250 billion of Italian debt.

But the two parties may disagree on how to put their policies into action, with Five Star looking less ready than Lega to an open war.

Both Mr Salvini and Mr Di Maio have warned the EU's budgetary austerity is "suffocating" Italy and have spoken out against the bloc's sanctions issued against Russian Federation following the annexation of Crimea and branded unfair for the country the EU's migration rules.

M5S leader Luigi Di Maio said on Tuesday that "perhaps we'll be able to wrap up the contract of government" on Wednesday.

"A minister from the League who would work on security and border control would be a guarantor that whoever comes to Italy has the right to do so", he said.

"Europe needs to be respected, and Italy needs to be respected".
