Man dies of 'projectile wound of the head' after vape pen explodes

Florida Records First Death Due to An E-Cigarette Vape Pen Explodes in Smoker’s Face Killing Him Smoking using an Electronic cigarette or a vape pen

- The autopsy report for a man whose vape pen exploded, causing a fire in his St. Petersburg home, shows the exploding pen - not the fire - killed him. And in 2016, a vape pen user in NY suffered third-degree burns after the pen exploded in his trousers, NBC 4 NY reported. His death has been ruled accidental.

"This is a bad shock", Christopher D'Elia, the man's father, told ABC Action News.

Bill Pellan, director of Investigations at the Pinellas County Medical Examiner's Office, confirmed the report to WFTS. The medical examiner says the pen was a Smok-E Mountain Mech Works, a type of unregulated mechanical mod e-cigarette, which in an online description says "does not come with safety features".

Smok-E Mountain, however, told ABC its e-cigarettes do not explode, suggesting instead that the device's battery or atomizer was likely to blame.

The explosion sent two pieces of the vape pen into his cranium, the report said. The U.S. Fire Administration reports that "there were 195 separate e-cigarette fire and explosion incidents in the United States reported by the media between 2009 and 2016".

In 2016, a vaping device blew up in a man's face in NY - knocking out his teeth, ripping a hole in his tongue and leaving his hands covered in burns.

A recent report from FEMA and the U.S. Fire Administration found that e-cigarettes and vape pen explosions are not common - but when they do explode, the shape of the devices make them behave like "flaming rockets".

Also that year, a 14-year-old girl had mild to moderate burns after an e-cigarette exploded in the pocket of a person nearby while on a Harry Potter ride at Universal Studios in Orlando, Florida.

These cases were not fatal.

Replace the batteries if they get damaged or wet.
