The U.K.'s new home secretary said Tuesday that more than 60 members of the so-called Windrush generation may have been wrongfully deported.

Mr Javid denied there was a "systemic" problem in the Home Office, but accepted that in Windrush cases people had faced "too large a burden" in proving long-term residency.

Sajid Javid revealed the number could still rise as officials trawl through over 8,000 cases dating back to 2002, as he branded the term "hostile environment", coined by Theresa May, "un-British".

But the Government would "proactively" seek to contact the other 31.

He said: "I've asked officials to be absolutely certain and thorough and check over every record and make sure".

The Home Secretary emphasised that the figures are not final and are subject to change.

Appearing in front of the home affairs select committee yesterday for the first time as home secretary, Sajid Javid, told MPs that 63 individuals had been identified as possible wrongful deportees.

"The reason we use the word "could" - it means of the 8,000 records that came up of deportation removals there's so far a focus on the 63 where there's something in their records that indicates they could have been in the United Kingdom before 73 who have been removed or deported".

In three cases, the person does have a legal basis to stay in Britain, while nine cases are ongoing.

For weeks, the Home Office under Amber Rudd said repeatedly that they were not aware of any Windrush deportations, although they were checking.

Figures released in documents provided to the committee showed that a dedicated helpline set up after the Windrush furore erupted has received more than 11,500 calls. Many came to the United Kingdom legally as children but have no formal documentation, which has also led to them being refused jobs or healthcare.
