A school resource officer is being hailed as a hero after confronting a gunman at an IL high school Wednesday morning, officials say.

Police Chief Steven Howell said at a news conference that the officer shot and wounded the lone gunman at Dixon High School about 8 a.m. Wednesday.

The suspect was arrested just west of the school and was being treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

It was not clear whether the suspect was a student at the school, and officials did not immediately respond to calls for further comment.

The 19-year-old who was shot by a school resource officer in Dixon, Ill has unofficially been identified as Matt Milby, according to Sauk Valley Media. The suspect fired at the officer, who shot back, injuring the gunman.

Students have been reunited with their families. The school resource officer is a member of the Dixon Police Department.

Howell, Jr., said the names of the suspect and the school resource officer are not being released. Howell, Jr., said they also believe there is no further threats to staff or students, or community. Rep Adam Kinzinger was briefed on the situation by Lee County Sheriff John Simonton.
