Sports wagering is a freedom, not just a source of state revenue

The U.S. Supreme Court on Monday ruled in favor of New Jersey and lifted a federal ban on sports wagering.

Why the hurry? Bloomberg reported states have a lot of revenue to gain if they legalize an industry that was once left to the black market.

The Reverend Mark Creech of the Christian Action League said in a statement released Tuesday that he believed the Supreme Court's decision allows states to engage in "the fleecing of their own citizens".

That ruling strikes down a federal ban in place since 1992 that restricts sports betting for most states.

Five states - Connecticut, Mississippi, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and West Virginia - already had enacted laws in preparation for a Supreme Court decision permitting legalization, according to ESPN.

Contrast Malloy's approach, though, with the approach of another Democratic governor, John Hickenlooper of Colorado.

"State leaders need to be prepared to tell the truth about the economic predation of casino gambling", he told Baptist Press in written comments.

It's not like casino gaming is struggling in Oklahoma.

Now comes an opportunity to give patrons another gaming option, betting on sports. AGA President Geoff Freeman described the high court's opinion as "a victory for the millions of Americans who seek to bet on sports in a safe and regulated manner". That provision unequivocally dictates what a state legislature may and may not do.

Alito wrote that Congress itself could proscribe all sports betting, but that it can't instruct the state governments not to do so. Stephen Breyer issued an opinion that concurred in part and dissented in part. Nearly two-thirds of those surveyed did not believe it was morally wrong to gamble on sporting events.
