United Kingdom customers being sold false broadband speeds

Homeworkers are paying for broadband services that are on average 51% slower than advertised, according to new Which? analysis.

Consumer watchdog Which? looked at the result of 235,000 uses of its broadband speed checker to find out how many people are actually receiving the service for which they signed up.

The research, conducted ahead of new Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) guidelines coming into effect on Wednesday, reveals widespread differences between the speeds advertised and those delivered. HEXUS previously reported about the new advertising guideline last month. He cited Ofcom's most recent testing, which showed a 200Mbps connection from Virgin Media averaged 92 per cent of the advertised speed at peak times.

Customers who paid for speeds of "up to 50Mbps" fared the best, achieving 35Mbps on average, but those paying for "up to 17Mbps", received only a paltry 6Mbps.

The new rules will mean that broadband providers can no longer advertise "up to" speeds which are available to just 10% of customers.

An interesting graphic was shared by Which?, tabulating its results, as reproduced above.

Alex Neill, Which? managing director of home services, said: 'This change in the rules is good news for customers, who have been continuously been let down by unrealistic adverts and broadband speeds that won't ever live up to expectations. Until now, service providers have been allowed to advertise "up to" speeds that are available to only a tenth of customers.

Ofcom says major providers are ripping off four million households by charging for standard tariffs double what they demand for "superfast" deals. This is just one of the changes Ofcom have made in the a year ago following on from a rule that made broadband suppliers list phone line rental and broadband costs into one price rather than separating them and confusing potential customers. However, BT's superfast services start at £24.99 a month.

Under plans to crack down on rip of practices, phone and broadband customers will soon receive alerts telling them when the have reached the end of their contract, says Ofcom.

This issue was recently highlighted in an article on Express.co.uk with a simple phone call shown to reduce the price and boost the speed once a contract has come to an end.
