US Imposes Sanctions on Venezuelans Ahead of Presidential Election

US supports Venezuela's democracy by accusing Maduro of drug profiteering ahead of elections Venezuela's record-low voter turnout is the latest chapter in the death of its democracy

Maduro said the factory would now be "producing with the industrial working class".

The U.S. Treasury slapped sanctions on one of Venezuela's most powerful men Friday - Diosdado Cabello, along with his family and economic adviser - accusing him of drug trafficking, money laundering and illegal mining.

President Maduro - who has been in office since 2013 - blames Venezuela's problems on an "economic war" being waged by foreign governments and businesses.

The sanctions order also designates three companies - 11420 Corp, Noor Plantation Investments LLC and SAI Advisors Inc, described in a Treasury statement as Florida companies owned or controlled by Sarria - according to the Treasury Department website.

The Wall Street Journal published a sprawling investigation in 2015 that alleged that Cabello, along with his brother, Jose David were being investigated by USA prosecutors for leading a drug trafficking and money laundering ring with other top military and government officials.

U.S. still hopeful for North Korea summit - White House
Yonhap says the two-week military exercise between the USA and South Korea started Friday and included about 100 warplanes. Mr Trump said that if the North Korean leader agrees to denuclearise, he will get what Mr Trump is calling "protections".

In April, Vice President Pence announced that the US would give almost $16 million to United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees to assist Venezuelans, who have fled to Colombia and Brazil.

The U.S. Treasury announced on Friday that it has imposed sanctions on an influential Venezuelan political figure, three persons related to him and his alleged "corruption network".

"The Venezuelan people suffer under corrupt politicians who tighten their grip on power while lining their own pockets".

Maduro, who himself is subject to USA sanctions, repeatedly slammed Washington's punitive measures as part of a broader campaign aimed at overthrowing his government, and said that the policy has nothing to do with drug trafficking, elections or support of democracy.

The United States has been stepping up pressure on the South American country by imposing a string of sanctions on its senior officials.
