NASA's Scott Tingle, Russian cosmonaut Anton Shkaplerov, and Norishige Kanai of the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA), closed the hatch for their journey back from the International Space Station (ISS) at 6.55am United Kingdom time.

Anton Shkaplerov, who was the first to be lifted and carried from the capsule, told the camera crew: "We are a bit exhausted but happy with what we have accomplished and happy to be back on Earth".

The Soyuz MS-07 capsule, carrying Anton Chkaplerov, Scott Tingle, and Norishige Kanai, landed at 12:39 GMT near the city of Jezkazgan, in the steppe of Kazakhstan. "We are glad the weather is sunny", said Shkaplerov in footage broadcast from the landing site. There they will undergo a longer medical exam and then be flown either to Moscow or Houston.

Russian news agency TASS reported that the ball is planned to be used during the opening game of the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Moscow on June 14, although FIFA has not confirmed that information.

The official ball of the championship was delivered to the ISS on March 24, cosmonaut Anton by shkaplerov.

According to NASA, the USA space agency, astronauts can gain up to 3% in height while in space but regain their normal height when they return to Earth.

NASA astronaut Serena Aunon-Chancellor, Roscosmos cosmonaut Sergey Prokopyev and German astronaut Alexander Gerst are preparing to go to the ISS this week.

"An official Telstar 18 ball was brought to the space station for this objective and it's planned to be returned to Earth with the crew of the Soyuz MS-07 spacecraft on June 3", Roscosmos stated earlier.

The ISS passes into the dark side of the earth for roughly half of each of its 90-minute orbits.

The orbiting laboratory now has a crew of three: Americans Drew Feustel and Ricky Arnold and Russian Oleg Artemyev.
