CDC report reveals more than 45,000 Americans took their own lives in 2016

Suicide rates have increased across the board in the United States since 1999, according to new data released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Monica Kurz, director of the Kansas Suicide Prevention Resource Center, said that while she was not surprised by the numbers in the CDC's report, she is dismayed that suicide continues to be a significant problem in the state. Those two states also experienced the second and third biggest increases, more than 48 percent, in the period studied by the CDC.

Adults ages 45 to 64 had the largest increase in the suicide rate, from 13.2 suicides per 100,000 people in 1999 to 19.2 suicides per 100,000 in 2016.

The CDC said suicide could be triggered by a number of factors, not just mental illness.

The study noted that suicide is rarely caused by a single factor, and found more than half of cases involved a person who did not have a known mental health condition. They found that relationship problems or loss (45.1% versus 39.6%), life stressors (50.5% versus 47.2%), and recent or impeding crises (32.9% versus 26%) were significantly more common among those without known mental health conditions than those with. Finding economic circumstances was a major contributing factor, especially during the Great Recession (2008).

'If we step back from the statistics, mental health does not discriminate, ' said Dr Shainna Ali, a Florida psychologist. "We want improved access to care and better diagnostics, but we think that a comprehensive approach to suicide is what is needed". We need to be more connected. "Over time, I figured out and learned through trial and error what worked for me to get past that feeling", said Mike Bushman of Naperville.

The new report also found that, among US states and the District of Columbia, suicide rates varied fourfold in 2014-2016, from about 7 per 100,000 residents per year in Washington, D.C., to 29 per 100,000 residents per year in Montana. While the study did not look at the potential reasons why that might be, Schuchat offered a possible explanation.

FCA to launch investigation into TSB's IT failures
Referring to the FCA's comments, chair Nicky Morgan said that TSB had "unfortunately earned the epithet "Truly Shambolic Bank". Bailey also raised concerns that the failures "could reduce trust in TSB and in the banking sector as a whole".

The most common method used across all groups was firearms. Montana recorded the highest rate of 29.2 suicides per 100,000, and Washington, D.C., the lowest, at 6.9 suicides per 100,000 people.

In New Orleans, researchers led by Orleans Parish Coroner Dr. Jeffrey Rouse also recently studied the high rates of suicide in the city even a decade after Hurricane Katrina.

From 1999 to 2016, rates increased in almost all states, ranging from a 6-percent increase in DE to a 57-percent increase in North Dakota.

The percent-change rates of the 12 worst states in those 18 years rose between 38 and 58 percent - including Oklahoma at 38 percent. Nevada was the only state to see a decrease. For instance, states can provide temporary help to those at risk, health care systems can provide phone or online treatment where services are not accessible, and schools can teach students how to manage stress.

The Minnesota Health Department has increased efforts to identify at-risk communities to help reduce suicides.

The CDC found that men accounted for three-quarters of all suicides, and women one-quarter.

It's a myth that talking about suicide might plant the idea in a person's mind, and experts say it's fine to ask someone a question like, "Are you having thoughts of suicide?" Approximately half of such deaths involve the use of a firearm.
