Public Health England, which published the figures, called for strengthened local and national services for the prevention and treatment of sexually transmitted infections (STIs).

There was a 22 percent rise in cases of gonorrhoea in 2017 compared to 2016 (from 36,577 in 2016 to 44,676 in 2017) and a strain of super gonorrhoea which can not be treated by antibiotics has made its way into the stats.

Almost 78% of diagnoses were in men who have sex with men.

PHE announced it is working with partner organizations to develop an action plan to address the rise in the number of cases of syphilis and gonorrhea.

The rates of syphilis for example is on a 70 year high last year according to the Public Health England statistics.

Increases have been seen in case numbers for chlamydia, gonorrhoea, herpes and syphilis - for which there has been a 28% rise in new diagnoses from 161 in 2016 to 206 in 2017.

Seventy per cent of diagnoses is among gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men, according to the report.

Chlamydia accounted for 31 percent (15,284) of all new cases of STI's in men who have sex with men.

There are two similar cases of this rare infection reported in Australia.

Over the past five years, attendances have jumped 13 percent.

The chairwoman of the Local Government Association's community wellbeing board said the rise was placing a "significant strain" on council resources. Health inequalities will remain and councils may be unable to respond effectively to unforeseen outbreaks'.

However, campaigners have argued that council cuts to sexual health services are to blame.

This marks a 20 percent increase from the previous year and a 148 percent jump in the past decade, and these rising numbers are not limited to the United Kingdom. There were 1,815 new diagnoses in 2017 compared to 1,747 in 2016 - an increase of 4% whilst figures for herpes have also risen by 5%.

Dr Gwenda Hughes, consultant scientist and head of the STI section at Public Health England, said: 'Sexually transmitted infections pose serious consequences to health - both your own and that of your current and future sexual partners.

"Consistent and correct condom use with new and casual partners is the best defense against STIs; and if you are at risk, regular check-ups are essential to enable early diagnosis and treatment", she said.

The infection can cause infertility and an inflammatory disease in your pelvis, so it's certainly not the type of thing you want running amok in your body.
