Trump Considering Muhammad Ali Pardon Even Though He Doesn't Need One

Sidney Guerrero | 08 June, 2018, 20:17

President Trump said Friday morning he was considering posthumously pardoning boxing icon Muhammad Ali. He said he wants the athletes to tell him who they think has been treated unfairly by the justice system and he would consider pardoning them.

"My conscience won't let me go shoot my brother, or some darker people, or some poor hungry people in the mud for big powerful America", Ali said at the time. "His memory is very popular now, I'm thinking about Muhammad Ali".

Ali - who died in 2016 - refused to fight in the war when the government tried to conscript him in 1967, citing his religious beliefs and opposition to the United States involvement in the conflict.

Ali was convicted in 1967 of draft evasion.

Ali's legal fight ended in 1971, when the Supreme Court ruled in his favour, reversing his conviction on a technicality.

FCA to launch investigation into TSB's IT failures
Referring to the FCA's comments, chair Nicky Morgan said that TSB had "unfortunately earned the epithet "Truly Shambolic Bank". Bailey also raised concerns that the failures "could reduce trust in TSB and in the banking sector as a whole".

Earlier this week, Mr Trump commuted the life sentence of a woman whose cause was championed by celebrity Kim Kardashian West. Ali's lawyer confirmed in a statement that the boxing legend has no use for a pardon.

But the conviction Ali would be pardoned for - evading the draft during the Vietnam War - was already overturned by the U.S. Supreme Court. He said he had been in contact with the widow after Trump's comments and they chose to issue a statement on behalf of the family.

He did not offer any other names, but said in response to a reporter's question that O.J. Simpson wasn't on the list.

"The power to pardon", said Trump, "is a handsome thing". The conviction came with a five-year prison sentence and $10,000 fine. Trump just pardoned Jack Johnson, and he obviously has boxing, a sport he loves, on his mind.

"There is no conviction from which a pardon is necessary".
