Trump Will Leave G-7 Early and Avoid Meeting Allies

Steven Clarke | 08 June, 2018, 23:27

President Donald Trump on Friday said Russian Federation should be readmitted to the G-7 group of leading industrial nations.

And after the Prime Minister took to US television to describe Mr. Trump as "unpredictable" and his tariffs "insulting and unacceptable", the President lashed out again online, tweeting that "Canada has all sorts of trade barriers on our Agricultural products".

"Prime Minister Trudeau is being so indignant, bringing up the relationship that the USA and Canada had over the many years and all sorts of other things", Trump said in a tweet on Thursday.

Trump's tweets came after Macron threatened to exclude the United States from the G-7 final statement to be issued in the mountainous tourism destination of Charlevoix.

At last year's summit in Sicily, Mr Trump would not agree to sign a closing statement on climate change and withdrew the U.S. from the Paris agreement days later.

"The American President may not mind being isolated, but neither do we mind signing a 6 country agreement if need be", Macron wrote.

Trump fired back at Trudeau with a couple of tweets on the eve of the summit.

The president said he was unconcerned about raising a trade ruckus at the gathering that usually emphasizes unity and downplays its disagreements. "The president will travel directly to Singapore from Canada in anticipation of his upcoming meeting with North Korea's leader Kim Jong Un Tuesday", White House press secretary Sarah Sanders told reporters. "Maybe we should come up with a new slogan", he said.

"Didn't Canada Burn Down White House?" Donald Trump To Justin Trudeau
Invoking his former rival Hillary Clinton, Trump touted how tough he is on Putin: "I have been Russia's worst nightmare". Mr Trudeau has described the USA claim that the tariff decision was taken on national security grounds as "insulting".

Trump's concerns are said to be based on the fact that other leaders who are attending the summit disagree with him on key issues and he "does not want to be lectured by them".

"Looking forward to straightening out unfair Trade Deals with the G-7 countries".

Macron said the message of other G7 leaders to Trump on the Iran deal should be: "You're not comfortable with an agreement signed by your predecessor, maybe just because it was signed by your predecessor, but don't stop others from respecting it and don't push Iran to leave, because today it's the best protection we have".

Trump was expected to meet with his French counterpart when he arrived at the Group of Seven summit in Quebec.

While there have been disputes over policy, analysts say the current dust-ups between the Trump administration and longtime US allies point to a potential shift in worldwide dynamics.

Earlier this year, President Trump announced that the US would withdraw from the Iran nuclear agreement, which has sparked backlash among allies. "They are relying on the overwhelming strength of the United States to compel a much weaker neighbor to give in to whatever they demand", Bothwell said. "Within the global framework, we have to take measures and that's what Canada has done and what the European Union has also announced".

The comments followed a string of tweets from the president railing against Canada, France and other European allies for what the president has described as an imbalanced trade relationship.
