United States president Donald Trump has said his wife, Melania, had a "big operation" to treat a kidney condition that lasted close to four hours, and can not accompany him to the G7 meeting in Canada under the orders of her doctor.

"First lady is great". That was a close to four-hour operation.

"She's doing great", Trump added. "She is a great First Lady", he continued. However, two reporters who saw the first lady did report that they saw Mrs. Trump walking with aides at the White House.

The first lady's office announced May 14 that she underwent an embolization procedure to treat a kidney condition described as benign. Following the procedure, which the statement said was successful, Trump remained in the hospital for several days, remaining out of sight from the public eye for another three weeks, sparking questions about the veracity of description of her procedure.

Her office has declined to provide additional details about Mrs Trump's condition, citing privacy rights.

President Donald Trump speaks to employees during a visit with first lady Melania and Vice President Mike Pence at the FEMA headquarters on June 6, 2018. Mrs. Trump's Communications Director, Stephanie Grisham, said the procedure was a success and without complication.

"The first lady's great", Trump told reporters Friday on the South Lawn before heading to Canada to attend the Group of 7 (G-7) summit.

The US First Lady traveled along with her husband to a hurricane briefing after recovering from surgery, putting an end to a storm of speculation and conspiracy theories over her disappearance in the mass media and social media, as well as triggering a new avalanche of jokes.

Melania Trump, never one to obsess like her husband about media attention, has laid low before. During her recovery from surgery they reported everything from near death, to facelift, to left the W.H.

Melania didn't attend an event with the first lady of Japan on Thursday.
