LeBron James (right) and Stephen Curry were the two highest paid basketball players in 2018.

Serena Williams - victor of 23 grand slam tennis singles titles - was previous year the sole female representative, but she has since largely been inactive, owing to pregnancy and giving birth to her daughter Alexis in September.

The latest Forbes top 100 highest-paid athletes listhas been released and there's a change at the very top.

And by the way, in case you're wondering, to make the Forbes 100 cut, it was necessary to earn $22.9M, which is the amount generated by the last man on the list, Charlotte Hornets basketball player Nicolas Batum.

Argentine professional footballer Lionel Messi is ranked second in the list, followed by soccer star Cristiano Ronaldo.

Floyd Mayweather Jr. (R) earned over a third of a billion dollars in his fight against Conor McGregor (L).

Looking back at the last five Canadian Grands Prix
It will also be the 300th career F1 race for Spanish star Fernando Alonso, the two-time world champion now driving for McLaren. To take part, visit Fantasy.formula1.com and simply search "GiveMeSport F1 League" in the public leagues to join in the fun.

However, it is the absence of a single female name that is most notable.

Floyd Mayweather, Cristiano Ronaldo and Tiger Woods - at number 16 this year - are the only three athletes to top the best-paid list over the past 18 years.

American golfer Phil Mickelson (47) was the oldest athlete in the top 100 with earnings of $41.3m while Greek basketballer Giannis Antetokounmpo (23) was the youngest with earnings of $35.5m. While the magazine's annual ranking has "long been testosterone-heavy", Forbes senior editor Kurt Badenhausen wrote, at least one female athlete had always snagged a spot since the magazine expanded its list in 2010. He jumps 13 spots to fifth with an income of $90 million, including $19 million from endorsement partners.

According to Forbes, the earnings reported on the list include prize money, salaries, bonuses and endorsement incomes accrued between June 1, 2017 and June 1, 2018. All together the 100 athletes have earned United States dollars 3.8 billion, which exceeds last year's index by 23%.

The top 100 has an global flavour with athletes from 22 countries, but Americans dominate the action with 66 making the cut thanks to sky-high salaries in baseball, basketball and football.
