The hearing in Manhattan came after a grand jury indicted the man behind films such as Shakespeare in Love and The English Patient, on charges involving two women.

The criminal sex act charge against Weinstein stems from an encounter with Lucia Evans, who told The New Yorker and then investigators from the Manhattan district attorney's office that Hollywood producer forced her to perform oral sex on him during what she thought would be a casting meeting.

The decision was made by the court that Weinstein will return to court on September 22 for a hearing on motions in his case.

Brafman says Weinstein is "holding up reasonably well".

Weinstein turned himself in at a NY police station on May 25, and was taken to court in handcuffs for his initial arraignment.

Asked about her own alleged sexual assault at the hands of Weinstein, the actress explained, "I$3 didn't really understand the law and I didn't think I was important enough to make a big enough deal over, I just kind of tried to put it to the side and keep working and go on about my life". One complainant, who has accused Weinstein of rape, has not been identified publicly.

"I take issue when the District Attorney announces an indictment of Mr. Weinstein and suggests that denigrating victims in any way as inappropriate victimization again". Boyce told ABC News.

The not guilty plea marked Weinstein's first court appearance since surrendering May 25 after months of accusations by dozens of women alleging sexual and other misconduct.

Weinstein Co. had objected to the suits proceeding in NY district court, saying they would distract the company from an "efficient and orderly liquidation process".

The #MeToo movement has seen people around the world come forward with cases of sexual mistreatment, leading to the downfall of powerful men across industries, including Oscar victor Kevin Spacey. They urged other victims to come forward and join the complaint. His wife Georgina Chapman left him, and leading figures in politics whom he had supported denounced him.

Weinstein has denied the accusations and has remained free on $1 million cash bail.

Weinstein already faces a slew of civil lawsuits, is reportedly under federal investigation and his former studio has filed for bankruptcy.

Gershman said Weinstein faces an uphill climb. The Los Angeles Police Department opened a criminal investigation for alleged rape, and NY and London police are investigating other sexual assault allegations.
