Robert Mueller's special counsel's office hit former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort with two more criminal charges Friday and added his longtime business associate Konstantin Kilimnik as a second defendant in the case, after accusing them earlier in the week of attempting to convince witnesses to commit perjury.

He also has denied being connected to Russian intelligence agencies.

The court filings accuse Manafort, Gates, and Kilminik of engaging "in a multi-million dollar lobbying campaigning" at the direction of Viktor Yanukovych, the former Russia-aligned Ukrainian president from 2006 until 2014.

"The five previously charged counts against Manafort remain unchanged: conspiracy against the United States, conspiracy to launder money, unregistered agent of a foreign principal, false and misleading FARA statements, and false statements".

Mueller has suggested in previous filings that Kilimnik had ties to Russia's spy agencies.

Reid, 26, appeared in 13 games for San Francisco last season but is now unsigned and has also filed a grievance against the NFL.

The new indictment charges Manafort and Kilimnik with obstruction of justice and conspiracy to obstruct justice related to contacts they had with two witnesses earlier this year. A witness told investigators recently that Manafort wanted them to commit perjury about a lobbying effort they worked on for him in the USA, a filing in DC District Court said.

In court papers, the Federal Bureau of Investigation is alleging that at least one witness in the Manafort case was contacted by the former Trump aide and coached on what he should say about his lobbying practices. He also is facing a separate federal case in Alexandria, Va., just outside D.C. The special counsel's office may hope that Manafort decides to plead guilty and cooperate with prosecutors by offering evidence against other people.

The new charges against both men - known as a superseding indictment - alleges that they sought to tamper with witnesses ahead of Mr Manafort's trial next month.

Mr Kilimnik appears unlikely to face these new charges in court. It's not clear exactly what Manafort knows, but he does appear to be a linchpin between Trump's campaign and Russian Federation.
