US Special Forces on a training mission in southern Somalia came under mortar and small arms fire from insurgent forces in the region, AFP and the New York Times reported, citing Defense Department officials.

Al Shabaab claimed Friday it mounted a "fierce attack" on a joint U.S.

A US service member has been killed and four others injured in Somalia, the USA military confirmed Friday.

The attack was described as complex in nature, with the enemy coordinating their fires resulting in one American soldier Killed in Action and five Wounded in Action, which only left half of the team uninjured by the end of the firefight.

One member of the "partner forces" was also wounded.

The Americans were working in cooperation with local partner forces when they were attacked.

The Pentagon didn't identify the USA commando who was killed, pending notification of next of kin.

The forces were also setting up "a permanent combat outpost" to help expand the Somali government's control over the region, where the jihadist insurgency for years has destabilized the east African nation, particularly in rural areas. That was believed to be the first death of a U.S. troop in Somalia since the infamous 1993 Black Hawk Down disaster. The injured service members were medevaced to Djibouti, where US Africa Command (AFRICOM) maintains its Camp Lemonnier base. It was unclear whether all 800 US, Kenyan and Somali troops were present when the attack took place.

The role of USA troops during the operation was to provide aerial surveillance and to provide other assistance to the coalition group.

Whether or not Al-Shabaab was motivated and emboldened by what happened in Niger past year and wanted to repeat the tactical successes of their fellow Jihadis is unknown at this time.

It was also a 3rd Special Forces Group team which was hit in Niger a year ago, an ambush which killed four American soldiers and led to a massive investigation by the Pentagon.

This is the second United States military member to be killed in Somalia since the 1993 Black Hawk down incident that resulted in the deaths of 18 American soldiers. The US estimates that al-Shabaab commands 4,000 to 6,000 active fighters, making it one of the terror group's largest affiliates.
