Julian Alaphilippe won the first mountain stage of the Critérium du Dauphiné in Lans-en-Vercors as Gianni Moscon overhauled his Team Sky colleague Michal Kwiatkowski to take the overall lead.

Martin, who rides for Team Emirates, finished four seconds ahead of Welshman Thomas after a late attack on the climb to Valmorel ski resort in France.

After finishing the stage in ninth among a select chasing group, Team Sky's Gianni Moscon (Italy) took the race lead and leadfrogged teammate Michal Kwiatkowski (Poland), with Thomas is now in third.

UK Court dismisses challenge to Northern Ireland abortion law
The Court was deciding specifically whether this should be abolished in cases of rape, incest and fatal foetal abnormality. British prime minister Theresa May has said abortion should be a devolved issue for Northern Ireland .

Adam Yates, who'd made much of the early running in the stage, came home in third, 15 seconds behind Martin.

Thomas believes winning the Criterium would surpass his achievements to date, which include wins in both the Paris-Nice and Volta ao Algarve races in 2016 as well as victory in the stage one time trial in last year's Tour de France. I'll try to enjoy it in the jersey tomorrow.

Thomas then launched a spectacular bid to catch Martin and only French hope Romain Bardet was able to follow. Martin and his rivals will face two climbs of category two in the first 20 kilometres and then the summit finish of 12.7 kilometres at an average of seven per cent.
