President Trump Says Pardoning is a 'Beautiful Thing,' Considers More

Muhammad Ali Trump floats possibility of pardoning Muhammad Ali

President Trump said Friday that he's thinking about pardoning deceased boxing legend and civil rights activist Muhammad Ali.

Ali, who died in 2016, was convicted in 1967 for refusing to report for induction into the USA military during the Vietnam War.

A lawyer for Ali s family, Ron Tweel, said while Trump s gesture was appreciated, "a pardon is unnecessary", given that the sentence was overturned.

President Donald Trump's widely-mocked trial balloon of pardoning Muhammad Ali gave the legendary boxer's former wife the opportunity to suggest a better course for the commander-in-chief.

"There will be more pardons", Trump said.

Mr Trump told reporters his team is "looking at literally thousands of names" of people who have come to their attention because they have been treated unfairly or their sentences are too long. "I'm thinking about that very seriously, and some others, and some folks that have some sentences that aren't fair". I'm thinking about that seriously. The White House did not immediately comment on the lawyer's statement. "We as Muslims have to stand up to those who use Islam to advance their own personal agenda", Ali said. The U.S. Department of Justice says, in general, it does not accept applications for posthumous pardons because its time can be better spend on living persons.

ME senators caution Trump on self-pardon
The bill will be an amendment to the defense authorization legislation which the Senate will soon debate. This reality doesn't seem to discourage the senators, who are aggressively moving forward with the bill.

Ali's refusal to join the military on the basis of his religion stirred national controversy, but he remained firm in his beliefs despite pressure from both the public and boxing organizations.

Jackson had been convicted of violating the Mann Act in 1913 when it was ruled that he took a woman across state lines for "immoral purposes".

Ali was convicted in 1967 of draft evasion during the Vietnam War.

Trump has been keen to exercise his power to pardon or commute sentences in recent weeks.

For Trump, Kardashian's support of Johnson was key, given the President's penchant for considering the pardoning of celebrities like Martha Stewart and former Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich, also a former TV personality.

Earlier this week, a White House official reportedly called pardons the president's new "favorite thing" to discuss and the billionaire is reportedly "obsessed" with them. "I would get more thrill out of pardoning people that nobody knew". "They've seen a lot of abuse and they've seen a lot of unfairness", he said.
