US President Donald Trump says that he is contemplating a posthumous presidential pardon for former heavyweight boxing champion Muhammad Ali who evaded a military draft during the Vietnam war.

Trump said Friday that he is considering 3,000 people for pardons. Ali's conviction for draft evasion was overturned fifty years ago by the Supreme Court, so Trump's strategy to hide his racism behind this pardon was laughable.

On Wednesday, Trump commuted the sentence of Alice Marie Johnson, who was serving life in prison on drug charges, after reality star Kim Kardashian West lobbied the president in an Oval Office meeting to intervene on her behalf. Lewis "Scooter" Libby, and boxer Jack Johnson most recently, conservative author Dinesh D'Souza.

"I'm thinking about somebody that you all know very well".

But a lawyer for his family said it was "unnecessary" as Ali was pardoned by the Supreme Court in 1971.

Still, it's curious that Trump would consider Ali for a pardon at all. I thought Alice yesterday was lovely.

Per Jacqueline Alemany of CBS News, Trump said, "I'm thinking about Muhammad Ali" when discussing potential pardons. "I'm thinking about that very seriously".

It was in Texas, in 1967, where Muhammad Ali made headlines for refusing to be drafted into the U.S. Army. "I want to do people who are unfairly treated like an Alice".

He also issued a pardon to Dick Cheney s former chief of staff Lewis "Scooter" Libby, who was convicted of lying to the Federal Bureau of Investigation in connection with the leak of a Central Intelligence Agency operative s identity.

He also said that he is open to hearing recommendations from NFL players and other athletes, arguing it was a better outlet for their concerns about racial injustice than taking a knee when the national anthem is played.

In April, he issued a full pardon in April to I. Lewis "Scooter" Libby, a former top aide to Vice President Dick Cheney who was convicted of lying to investigators and obstruction of justice following the 2003 leak of the covert identity of Central Intelligence Agency officer Valerie Plame.

Asked if he will pardon former campaign aides such as Paul Manafort, indicted by special counsel Robert Mueller, Trump said, "They haven't been convicted of anything".

"My conscience won't let me go shoot my brother, or some darker people, or some poor hungry people in the mud for big powerful America", he said at the time.
