Donald Trump pulls USA from G7 joint statement, accuses Trudeau of 'dishonesty'

Steven Clarke | 11 June, 2018, 02:46

The White House has escalated its trade tirade by levelling more withering and unprecedented criticism against Canada's prime minister, branding Justin Trudeau a back-stabber unworthy of President Donald Trump's time.

Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) on Twitter Saturday sought to counter the comments about Trudeau.

Sharply criticizing Trump's remarks on tariffs, Prime Minister Trudeau promised that Canada would answer with its own on July 1 unless the USA reversed course.

As President Trump was leaving the G7 summit onboard Air Force One, Trudeau held a press conference in which he said that Canada would not be "pushed around" by the US on trade. "Kim must not see American weakness". He justified President Trump's decision to drop out of a joint statement made by G7 countries this weekend.

In a tweet posted Saturday evening, Trump said his decision was based on "false statements" made by Trudeau during a press conference he gave, as well as "the fact that Canada is charging massive Tariffs" on USA companies. "That's what weak, dishonest Justin Trudeau did".

The Canadian prime minister's office responded to Trump's tweets accusing Trudeau of "false statements" on Saturday, saying that the Prime Minister said nothing during the G7 summit that he had not said previously. "And that's what bad faith Justin Trudeau did with that stunt press conference".

Kudlow adds that Trudeau's press conference was indignant and seemed to claim it was an attempt to undermine President Trump's historic summit with Kim Jong un in three days.

The White House is escalating its verbal attacks against Justin Trudeau, the prime minister of close American ally Canada.

Trump Aide Larry Kudlow Calls Justin Trudeau Trade Comments A 'Betrayal'
But Trump remains firm in his determination to apply tariffs in a situation he believes is unfair to America's economy. Kudlow acknowledged Trump's reaction to Trudeau's comments was "in large part" about the meeting with Kim.

Speaking on "Fox News Sunday", White House trade adviser Peter Navarro echoed Kudlow's comments and said Trudeau's post-conference comments were in bad faith. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) asked on Twitter whether the USA was "executing Putin's diplomatic and national security strategy or AMERICA's diplomatic and national security strategy?" The negotiations will either be bilateral or trilateral with Mexico, he said.

"Of course it was, in large part", Kudlow said.

As America distanced itself from its allies while attempting to pick a genuine fight with its placid neighbor to the north, a dumbfounded rest of the world reacted - and a couple of Republicans weighed in, too.

"They should have said to him, 'God speed, you are negotiating with the insane nuclear tyrant in North Korea, and we are behind you, '" Kudlow added.

In response, Canada, Mexico and the European Union said they were putting in place their own retaliatory measures.

Clearly, Mr. Trump saw things differently.

"I understand the president was upset", Feinstein told CNN. The president could have said that.
