Pole Sitter Vettel Says ‘I could have been even faster’ in Qualifying
Motor racing-Hamilton just happy to finish in Canada
11 June, 2018, 03:46
Sebastian Vettel believes the hypersoft tyres are not a "good race tyre" and is surprised to see Red Bull starting on them for Sunday's Canadian Grand Prix.
The Ferrari man started on pole and lead throughout around Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, where Hamilton had triumphed in each of the past three seasons.
It was Ferrari's first win in Canada since 2004 and came from their first pole there in 17 years.
Red Bull believe their vehicle will be even stronger in race trim than it was in qualifying, when Verstappen was less than two tenths behind Vettel in the Q3 shoot-out when all of the leading cars ran hypersofts.
"Like every Grand Prix, there's no one person to dedicate it to", said Vettel. Per Formula 1 rules, the accidental waving of the checkered flag means the race has to be classified via the number of laps completed at the time the flag was displayed.
"We're happy that we qualified on the UltraSoft tyre in Q2, I think it's the right choice for our vehicle. We know we have the possibility of winning the race but we have to be flawless".
Vettel picked up his second career victory at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve and the first for Ferrari in Montreal since Michael Schumacher won three in a row from 2002-04.

Vettel, from his fourth Canadian pole, made a clean start while behind him Bottas had to scrap to resist a robust attack from Verstappen.
Starting cleanly, Vettel was pulling away from the field when a crash between Brandon Hartley and hometown favourite Lance Stroll brought out the safety auto in the very first lap. "I'm just so happy that I finished", he told Britain's Sky Sports television. The Spaniard was forced out with engine trouble after 42 laps. There's one point in it at the top, and Valtteri Bottas, Daniel Ricciardo and Max Verstappen can all get themselves right back in there if a result or two goes their way. Vettel's lone pit stop on the 38th of 70 laps saw him emerge with a six-second lead.
Fernando Alonso would have hoped to make Q3 in his 300th Grand Prix weekend, but he had to settle for P14 after finishing Q2 more than a second off the pace.
Hamilton's chief championship rival, Sebastian Vettel, finished fifth.
A grandstand finish looked possible until Bottas ran off at Turn One and took to the grass before recovering.
Key in that regard was his backhand, which consistently flustered Thiem, who didn't have the same bag of tricks at his disposal. Sunday's championship victory was as convincing and efficient a Grand Slam title as nearly any other in Nadal's epic career.
