The conference took place behind closed doors at the Pontifical Academy of Sciences.

Francis said that modern society with its "massive movement of information, persons and things requires an enormous supply of energy".

The pope told oil executives on Saturday that climate change risks destroying civilization and that the world must reduce fossil fuel use, Reuters reported. "This is disturbing and a cause for real concern", Francis said in an address at the close of a two-day conference titled Energy Transition and Care of Our Common Home.

But both companies - along with most other multinational energy companies - continue to search for sources of fossil fuels even though, as Laudato Si' pointed out, much of the fossil fuel already discovered must stay in the ground if the world is to keep warming to within 2.7 to 3.6 degrees Fahrenheit as stated in the Paris Agreement.

The International Energy Agency (IEA) has said that global energy demand rise will grow 30 percent by 2040. MORE pulled the USA out of the Paris Climate Accord. During their meeting in March 2017, the Pope gave Trump a copy of the 2015 encyclical on climate change before the administration made their decision to pull out of the agreement, TIME reported. "There is no time to lose". He also warned that in an effort to bring energy sources to everyone, we must be careful not to raise global temperatures, damage the environment, or increase the number of people living in poverty.

It was exclusively dedicated to the climate change issues and entitled the topic as "One of the Principal Challenges facing Humanity in our Day".

Pope Francis said that about a billion people are living without electricity and that lacking this basic need hinders their ability to move out of poverty, according to the Wall Street Journal.

Many had complied, he said, including by expediting plans to stop coal burning at the university power plant.

"This is a challenge of epochal proportions", he said Saturday.

He said that though the world is affected by climate change, it was the poor who would "suffer most from the ravages of global warming". "Yet the effects of climate change are not evenly distributed".

On Thursday, Equinor, the Norwegian oil giant formerly called Statoil, released a report saying that the world needed to move faster in adopting renewable energy to achieve the goals of the Paris agreement.

"We received the land as a garden from the Creator, let us not pass it on to future generations in the form of the desert", - concluded the Pope.
