Appearing on CNN's "State of the Union" Sunday, Kudlow characterized Trudeau's post-G7 news conference, in which he promised to "move forward with retaliatory measures" to counter U.S. tariffs on steel and aluminum imports from Canada, the European Union and Mexico, as a "betrayal".

But Mr. Trudeau also said it was "kind of insulting" the USA had imposed tariffs on steel and aluminum under the guise of national security, noting Canadians stood "shoulder to shoulder" with Americans in overseas wars. Kudlow suggested on "Face the Nation" that Mr. Trump saw Trudeau as trying to weaken his hand before that meeting, saying the president won't "allow the people to suddenly take pot shots at him".

Trudeau's remarks prompted Trump to pull out of a joint communique that was a fragile consensus on the trade dispute between Washington and its top allies, Kudlow said.

Trump was ticked off by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau taking amateur "pot shots" at him during a press conference after Trump left the G-7 summit en route to Singapore, Kudlow said.

The EU then announced tariffs on USA goods ranging from Harley-Davidson motorcycles to bourbon.

Trump in Singapore this morning escalated his war of words with Canada and the European Union in a pair of tweets.

On 1 June, the USA imposed a 25% tariff for steel and 10% for aluminium on imports from the European Union (EU), Canada, and Mexico.

In the bigger picture, Trump's provocations are gauged to elicit a reaction, others said - and Trudeau's response, far from off-the-cuff snarkiness, is also carefully planned.

The Prime Minister's Office did release a statement late Saturday, following Trump's tweets that said: "We are focused on everything we accomplished here at the G7 summit".

"I have made it very clear to the President that it is not something we relish doing, but it something that we absolutely will do", Mr. Trudeau said.

The president's latest tirade comes after a war of words erupted between the United States and its G7 allies following Mr Trump's decision to reject a joint communique at the end of a tense summit in Quebec on Saturday.

Whatever the prime minister's other actions on the world stage, dealing with Trump is a unique dilemma, they said, and they have not been bothered by Trudeau's decision to stick to civility until now. "And I think that's what the prime minister did today", said Jaime Watt, a Toronto-based conservative political strategist.

"And that's what bad faith Justin Trudeau did with that stunt press conference", he continued.

"He was polarizing. He really kind of stabbed us in the back", Kudlow said on CNN's "State of the Union".

"There's a special place in hell for any foreign leader that engages in bad faith diplomacy with President Donald J. Trump". He described all seven leaders coming together to sign the joint declaration despite having "some strong, firm conversations on trade, and specifically on American tariffs". Instead, the gathering apparently served to further inflame Mr Trump's belief that the United States is being treated unfairly by countries with which prior presidents had long ago negotiated trade agreements for the flow of goods and services.
