Foxconn workers at its factory in Hengyang were making Amazon Echo and Kindle devices, where an investigation by the Observer and China Labour Watch found "unethical and illegal" conditions.

China Labor Watch alleged multiple violations of Chinese labour law at the factory, describing an environment where 60-hour workweeks are common during peak season and workers do not receive adequate overtime compensation.

"They were underpaid", Lu said. Dispatch workers were paid at the same rate for regular and overtime hours, rather than time and a half as required, said China Labor Watch Program Officer Elaine Lu.

The report, which paints a picture of low pay and intense working conditions, includes the findings that "all workers are subject to long hours and low wages"; and "as wages are low, workers must rely on overtime hours to earn enough to maintain a decent standard of living".

A US-based rights group said there had been "a number of rights violations" at a Foxconn factory in China which manufactures products for Amazon. Majority were working 14 hour weeks without a single day off and had to ask for permission to visit the restroom.

China Labor Watch says their months-long investigation reveals harsh working conditions in a factory in the southern city of Hengyang in Hunan province.

Responding to the report, titled "Amazon Profits from Secretly Oppressing its Supplier's Workers", Amazon said it recently identified "two issues of concern" during a supplier audit at Hengyang Foxconn and "immediately requested a corrective action plan. Furthermore, the working conditions between dispatch workers and regular workers were markedly different despite working the same positions", the report states.

Amazon said it found two of the violations-excessive overtime and use of agency staff-during an audit of the factory in March.

The report noted staff were also subject to verbal abuse.

"Our company has already started a comprehensive investigation, if any irregularities are found, we will immediately improve and correct them, and safeguard our company's corporate social responsibility", Foxconn said in a filing with the Taiwan Stock Exchange.

It said it is monitoring Foxconn's response and "compliance with our Supplier Code of Conduct".

In its statement, Foxconn said salary reviews "are conducted regularly and we ensure that we offer all employees remuneration that exceeds statutory requirements and that is competitive with our industry peers".

Meanwhile, Foxconn "works hard to comply with all relevant laws and regulations", according to the same Reuters report.
