Assad declined to say whether he would run for a third term in three years, when his current term expires, saying it is "too early" to discuss it.

In an interview with British newspaper the Mail on June 10, carried in full by Syrian state news agency SANA, Assad was responding to a question about whether Moscow now controls Syria's diplomatic and military moves.

The Syrian leader also pointed fingers at the West for prolonging the conflict, suggesting that the United States, the United Kingdom and France have supported "terrorists" in his country. "They never, during our relation, try to dictate, even if there are differences", he said.

He said the involvement of foreign powers such as Britain, the USA and France was prolonging the conflict and had slowed down a resolution to the situation in rebel-held areas of southwestern Syria.

On the British and U.S. intervention in Syrian territory, the ruler said that it is illegal, while the Russian presence is legitimate as in the case of Iran, since both Moscow and Tehran were called by the Syrian government.

"Russia never coordinated with anyone against Syria, either politically or militarily, and that's contradiction; how could they help the Syrian Army advancing and at the same time work with our enemies in order to destroy our army", Assad said, stressing that both Russian Federation and Iran's presence in his country is legitimate. "I will tell you that if the whole world comes together to force us to leave Syria, they will not be able to evict us", Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah said in a televised address, adding that only the Syrian leadership could ask them to leave. "How could they help the Syrian army advancing and at the same time work with our enemies in order to destroy our army?"

The leader also responded to allegations that Russian Federation has started coordinating with Israel in regards to strikes against targets in Syria.

"Russia never coordinated with anyone against Syria, either politically or militarily, and that's [a] contradiction", he said.

The objective of Western nations' intervention in Syria, "the main goal", Al-Assad explained, "is regime change".

Despite his criticism of Western governments, Assad said his nation is "ready" to cooperate if they "change" their "political position".
