Mulroney says he's 'never seen anything' like Trump surrogates' attacks on Trudeau

Jean Garcia | 12 June, 2018, 23:54

President Trump unloaded on Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau this week; slamming the "meek and mild" leader after he publicly criticized Trump's decision to slap hefty tariffs on his nation's exports.

Foreign Affairs Minister Chrystia Freeland was measured Sunday, saying only that "Canada does not believe that ad hominem attacks are a particularly appropriate or useful way to conduct our relations with other countries".

Trump has consistently railed against what he claims are unfair trade practices by some of America's biggest trade partners, including Canada.

Following the G7 meeting, President Trump lashed out at Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, trashing his "false statements" and describing Trudeau as "dishonest and weak".

Shortly after the summit ended on Saturday, Mr Trump used Twitter to announce that he was ordering officials not to endorse the G7 communique agreed hours earlier by the US, UK, Canada, France, Germany, Italy and Japan. In the most Canadian manner (polite), not directly targeting anyone unlike POTUS (President of the United States). And chief economic adviser Larry Kudlow accused Trudeau of betrayal and stabbing Trump in the back.

Now with Trump piling in with his own attempt to humiliate the Canadian leader, the Globe and Mail newspaper said the USA leader's comments "couldn't have been better measured to raise Canadians' national sense of injustice". "I know it didn't look friendly; it was reported as nasty both ways, I was angry with her - actually, we were just talking, the whole group, unrelated to everything, very friendly, waiting for the document to come back".

On Fox News Sunday, White House Director of Trade Policy Peter Navarro also defended the president with adversarial language.

Justin Trudeau's stance was solid and clear!

"And that comes right from Air Force One". "He can't do that".

The Americans' criticism of Trudeau left a former Canadian prime minister, Stephen Harper, stumped.

Trump said a photograph released by German Chancellor Angela Merkel's spokesman that went viral captured a friendlier mood than what the snapshot conveyed to many analysts.

"Fair Trade is now to be called Fool Trade if it is not Reciprocal", he tweeted. The likelihood of a trade war between the U.S. and Canada appears to be on the rise, and both sides are mulling more trade barriers.

Trump's actions are being called ludicrous and absurd - but then again, coming from a man whose only experience before entering politics was as a businessman (with highly questionable dealings and tactics) and a reality TV show host, might not be all that surprising.

"I'm very confident that relationships between our countries, the United States and those G7 countries, will continue to move forward on a strong basis", Pompeo told reporters.

"Not fair to the PEOPLE of America!"

"Germany pays 1 percent (slowly) of GDP towards North Atlantic Treaty Organisation, while we pay 4 percent of a MUCH larger GDP", he wrote, saying that the United States was protecting Europe and being "clobbered on trade" in return. Merkel also said the European Union would "act" against the USA trade measures.

Trump took aim at an unspecified news release issued by Canada saying, "they made nearly 100 bln dollars on trade with u.s. (guess they were bragging and got caught!)". "We must put the American worker first!" he later wrote.
