Police operation over hostage situation in Paris

Steven Clarke | 12 June, 2018, 21:56

At least two people, including a pregnant woman, have been taken hostage in Paris, French media reports.

A street in the French captial has been closed off as police cordon the area.

The hostages are being held in the internal courtyard of the building, which contains a mix of offices and residential apartments.

The police said there was no indication that the incident was terrorism-related, but declined to elaborate on the hostage-taker's motive. The information could not be officially confirmed.

He said: "An armed man is entrenched rue des Petits Stables, Paris 10th".

Witnesses said the man claimed to be in possession of a gun and bomb.

Police would not immediately confirm whether the person holding the hostages was armed or describe the nature of his demands.

There were no immediate details on the age, appearance or nationality of the hostage taker.

Negotiations with the suspect were taking place, according to an Interior Ministry official who couldn't be identified because the operation was in progress.
