Trump and Kim meet after months of threats and insults

The menu for a working lunch served to U.S. President Donald Trump and North Korea's leader Kim Jong Un and their delegations during their summit at the Capella Hotel on Sentosa island in Singapore Trump and Kim meet after months of threats and insults

On Monday night's The Ingraham Angle, Wallace said that it's "almost surreal" to see Trump and Kim, "who just months ago were launching verbal ICBMs at each other", standing together and shaking hands.

Both leaders first emerged at 9:03 a.m. local time, walking along a bright red carpet from separate sides of a staging location at the Capella Hotel resort on Sentosa Island to shake hands with a backdrop of USA and North Korean flags. "And today is a great day for everybody, Singapore, China, a great day".

Yet even as he turned his attention to the summit, Trump continued his blistering attacks on Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, tweeting: "Fair Trade is now to be called Fool Trade if it is not Reciprocal". Again accusing the longtime USA ally of unfair trade practices, Trump added: "Then Justin acts hurt when called out!"

Ahead of the meeting, Trump had said he would be able to work out within the first minute whether his North Korean counterpart was serious about making peace.

Trump and Kim arrived in Singapore hours apart Sunday. "I could see Trump giving up a lot for very little in return". The handshake was firm but passed without Trump's customary antics as the two portly leaders smiled and looked each other in the eye for about 12 seconds.

Hours earlier, a jet carrying Kim landed.

Mr. Trump threatened to unleash "fire and fury" on North Korea previous year, and a North Korean official warned of a "nuclear-to-nuclear showdown" just a few weeks ago.

Trump planned to speak to reporters after concluding the summit, the White House said.

Trump is set to meet with Lee on Monday. The North has faced crippling diplomatic and economic sanctions as it has advanced development of its nuclear and ballistic missile programs. Depending on how truthful Kim Jong Un is, that process could take anywhere from two to 10 years.

The North, experts believe, stands on the brink of being able to target the entire USA mainland with its nuclear-armed missiles, and while there's deep skepticism that Kim will quickly give up those hard-won nukes, there's also some hope that diplomacy can replace the animosity between the United States and the North.

Only hours before the White House announcement, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo had seemed to lower expectations for the meeting, which Trump had earlier predicted could potentially yield an on-the-spot deal to end the Korean War. The front page of the Rodong Sinmun, the ruling party newspaper, was covered in pictures of the leader's late-night stroll through the bright lights of downtown Singapore. It's "stunning" and "not to be minimized in any way", but it's also important to remember that "Kim Jong Un has given up nothing at this point".

DPRK stands for North Korea's formal name, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea. "And I believe in North Korea".

USA partners in the region, particularly South Korea and Japan, are concerned that Trump's eagerness to struck a diplomatic win might lead to him to give away too much too early, perhaps undermining United States security guarantees to its allies as a way of resassuring Kim of the safety of his regime.

"We're here, overcoming everything", the reclusive Kim told Trump, adding that the two countries overcame many obstacles on their way forward.
