Dixons Carphone said it taken action to close off unauthorised access
13 June, 2018, 18:00
The owner of Dixons and Carphone Warehouse today revealed hackers grabbed the details of 5.9million customers cards and 1.2million personal records.
The breach was uncovered by Dixons Carphone this week, but apparently took place back in July 2017, when hackers tried to access a processing system used by its Currys PC World and Dixons Travel stores. The company says there's no evidence of fraudulent activity, but those affected have been notified.
The majority of these cards had chip and protection, according to the company, which said the data accessed did not contain pin codes, card verification values, nor any data enabling cardholder identification.
It admitted non-financial personal data, such as name, address or email address, was accessed but it again insisted that it had seen no evidence of any fraud at this stage. "The protection of our data has to be at the heart of our business, and we've fallen short here", CEO Alex Baldock said in a statement. "We've taken action to close off this unauthorized access and though we have now no evidence of fraud as a result of these incidents, we are taking this extremely seriously".
It is investigating the hacking attempt, which happened past year.
In a statement released this morning, the company said during a review of systems and data, it discovered that there has been "unauthorised access to certain data held by the company".
Dixons Carphone says it has contacted the relevant banks.
Because the data breach dates back to past year it will be dealt with by the ICO under the powers of the Data Protection Act 1998 and not the European Union General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) which went into effect on May 25. That said around 105,000 details were from non-EU cards that may not have the same protections, so Dixons Carphone has informed the card companies in question so they can take action.
Baldock joined Dixons Carphone in April and last month the group warned on profits and said it would have to close shops, wiping more than 500 million pounds off its stock market value.
The group added it did not believe the personal data accessed had left the group's systems, but was advising those affected on protective steps they should take. We promptly launched an investigation, engaged leading cyber security experts and added extra security measures to our systems.
