Kim summit vindicates Cold War doctrine of deterrence

The comments followed the conclusion of a meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un at the Capella Hotel on Singapore's Sentosa Island.

Despite the omission, in an interview with ABC News, President Trump said he believes North Korea will abandon all their nuclear weapons.

The vice president "didn't say this at the Senate lunch today", she said of Gardner's remarks.

"I'm very optimistic that we will have a successful outcome from our meetings tomorrow", he said.

A slight smile crosses Kim's face as Trump places a hand on the North Korean Leader's arm. "That's not what you have to do", Trump said.

Former Trump adviser and Fox News contributor Sebastian Gorka ― who called North Korea an "evil, evil regime" less than a year ago, called the summit "stunning, absolutely stunning".

Trump's surprise, nearly offhand comments, made during a news conference after his summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, seemingly upended decades of the USA defense posture on the Korean Peninsula. "That's not part of the equation right now".

"Creating friction with a key ally with an issue like that may have been a mistake, frankly", he told AFP. "That is we're prepared to take actions that will provide them sufficient certainty that they can be comfortable that denuclearization isn't something that ends badly for them, indeed, just the opposite, that it leads to a brighter better future for the North Korean people".

North Korea regularly calls the military exercises provocative preparations for a northward invasion, and numerous scariest standoffs in recent years on the Korean Peninsula have happened when the drills were being staged.

Exercises with South Korea cover a range of eventualities, including drills with nuclear-capable bombers. "But I think without Otto, this whole thing wouldn't have happened".

Trump has now essentially adopted the standard North Korean line, calling the military exercises a "provocative" drain of money and announcing they would stop while he continues talks with Kim, whom he repeatedly praised as a solid negotiating partner.

Nam said Seoul welcomed the news that President Trump had "sufficiently expressed" his trust in Kim.

Trump speaks to Kim as the pair prepare to begin their closed-door talks.

Republican Senator Marco Rubio said he was "uncomfortable" with the suspension of military drills, especially "if this becomes permanent in exchange for nothing".

"The Singapore summit statement is essentially aspirational: no definitions of denuclearization, no timelines, no details as to verification", Haass said on Twitter.
